Physical Properties - Solubility
Solubility is the property that describes whether or not a substance can be dissolved.  Solubility is a term used when describing solutions or mixtures.  If you need additional review on mixtures, you may want to visit the "Elements, Compounds, and Mixtures" dialog.

A solution is a homogeneous mixture of different substances.  The substance that is dissolved is known as the solute.  The substance that does the dissolving is known as the solvent.

For example, let's look at a mixture of salt and water.  When a salt crystal is added to water, the salt crystal dissolves and becomes evenly distributed, resulting in a solution.  In this example, the salt is the solute because it is being dissolved.  The water is the solvent because it is doing the dissolving.

Ordinarily, the atoms in a salt crystal would not be visible to the naked eye, but they are shown in the animation below to demonstrate solubility.
